NEWS: Coronation anniversary: Book bares intrigues behind emergence of 20th Olu of Warri

Areyinka noted that the passage of an Olu and the enthronement of a successor was not a “Christmas party”, explaining that issues came up and took argument, debates, spirituality and unity of purpose to resolve to get a new king. According to him: “The book is filled with contents and graphical images from the announcement of the passage of the immediate past Olu through his obituary and the undercurrents that informed the coronation of the 20th Olu. The management of information, intrigues and from immediate family to ruling houses, and the Council of Chiefs in the mixture of sadness and joy that played out in the transition from one Olu to another could only have been so well captured by an insider and a partaker like the author. The writer satisfactorily used his vantage position as a partaker in the whole exercise to lead the reader into that process. That makes this book historic as a pool of rich history not only for Iwere nation, but for scholars and lovers of literatures.” Earlier, delivering the anniversary lecture, former commissioner and ex-Delta State House of Assembly member, Misan Okubeyinje, pleaded with the Itsekiri to cash in on “Cassava, Oil Palm, Aquaculture and Poultry Value Chain of Federal Government, for Prosperity of Itsekiri nation.” Arising from the cross pollination of ideas on the anniversary lecture, the Olu, Ogiame Ikenwoli directed the “Council of Chiefs and the Olu in Council to set up a committee to explore the agricultural potentials within his kingdom to come up an effective framework to maximize same taking advantage of existing FG incentives.” The first coronation anniversary of Ogiame Ikenwole continues today with an anniversary quiz for students and the command performance of Olu Akengbuwa, a stage play by Alex Eyengho featuring Nobert Young, Ejike Asiegbu, among other casts.

By Egufe Yafugborhi THE insight into the emergence of the 20th Olu of Warri, His Majesty, Ogiame Ikenwoli, came to the fore yesterday during a public presentation of a book, The Emergence of His Majesty Ogiame Ikenwoli As 20th Olu of Warri, authored by Toritseju Emiko, a prince of Warri Kingdom.
The book which was unveiled as part of the celebrations of Ogiame Ikenwoli’s first coronation anniversary also featured an anniversary lecture which examined the agricultural potentials in Itsekiri. Reviewing the book, Chief Solomon Areyinka, said: “The attempt to document publicly so much of what transpired in secret in the making of the 20th Olu is a bold display of transparency.
It shows the reign of Ogiame Ikenwoli is a very transparent one.”

ENT: Beyonce, Drake, Rihanna, Kanye West lead 2017 Grammy nominations

By Juliet Ebirim

The 2017 Grammy nominations were announced Tuesday morning and Beyoncé leads everyone with nine nominations on the heels of her hit “Lemonade” album. Rihanna, Drake and Kanye West are close behind with eight nods each.

“Lemonade” for album of the year, Beyoncé landed song and record of the year nods for “Formation,” which gained fame after her epic Super Bowl performance this year. Up against Beyoncé in all three categories is British pop sensation Adele, whose “25” is the best-selling album of 2016, fueled by the global hit “Hello.” While Beyoncé vs. Adele will certainly be the big story, Drake also joins them in the album of the year category with “Views.” He also swept up nominations for rap performance for “Hotline Bling,” and for his collaboration with Rihanna on “Work,” which is nominated for record of the year and pop duo/group performance. Rihanna got a nod for urban contemporary album for “Anti,” and for lending vocals to Kanye West’s controversial ‘Famous’, nominated for best rap song and rap/sung performance.
Rounding out the album of the year category is a newly reenergized Justin Bieber with “Purpose,” along with Americana star Sturgill Simpson’s much-acclaimed “A Sailor’s Guide to Earth.” The Grammy Awards will air live on Sunday, Feb. 12, and are hosted by James Corden.

ENT: Adeh Gbolahan-- Why no artiste should perform with CDs at concerts

Posted By: KIZZYERISKY - 10:41:00 PM
By AYO ONIKOYI

Budding musician, Gbolahan Adeola Jeremiah aka Adeh Gbolahan, is passionate about propagating Africa to the world through his music, which he describes as ‘Unstyled.’ In this chat with Star Tracker, he speaks about his career and future goals.
Enjoy… Beyond that, how would you define your style of music? I’m an eclectic guitarist and I play mostly at Jazz festivals. I think the best way to define my music is ‘African.’

Afro music is inbuilt for me. I also describe myself as ‘Unstyled’ musician; I could do Afropop, Afrobeat, Afrojazz, Afrofusion, Afro-highlife etc. In my latest song, ‘You and I,’ I have a potpourri of genres in there such as jazz, highlife and the likes.

Tell us more about your latest song, ‘You and I’ I thought I needed to do a love song in an African style. ‘You and I’ is a wedding song that has deep lyrics. It was produced by ace beat-maker, Wole Oni. I want to implore everybody to go online and download the song, and I can assure them that they would enjoy it and wouldn’t regret doing so.
So far, the response has been positive and overwhelming, and I appreciate everyone who supports me. Do you think Nigerians appreciate love songs? Yes, they do very well. Especially when it’s a matured song, and not dirty.

Tell us about some of your other songs? A lot of my songs are gospel. I have ‘Slavery,’ ‘Iwo ni mo ni’ which was recorded in South Africa; ‘Ose Baba’ featuring Segun Obe. It seems most of your songs are gospel? My first album was gospel, but my newer songs border on inspiration and love.

Do you think the likes of Davido and Wizkid do Afro music? Yes, they do. Their style is called Afro-pop, fused with highlife, hip-hop and other genres of music.
I started playing music professionally in 2010. When I started, I was playing the guitar for established artistes such as Segun Obe, Kenny K’ore, Nigga Raw, Ice Prince, Tiwa Savage, among others.
That must have been a period of tutelage for you;
what did you learn from playing for these artistes? I won’t say it was a tutelage period, because I was already a professional by then. They only contracted my service to be part of their band. However, they were all fantastic, and I enjoyed the time I spent with them. I also learnt craftsmanship from them.
Music is beyond just playing instruments or recording in the studio; you also need to connect with your fans.
What are the challenges you’ve faced so far in your music career? Acceptance by parents and family is a tough one, especially when they spent a lot of money to send you to school. At a point, finance was also a challenge. You mean finance is no longer an issue? (Smiles). I’d just say things are better now. Are you signed to any record label? No. but I have people that have interest in me, and they have always supported me.
Your educational background? I have a Diploma in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management and a BSc in Marketing, both from Lagos State University.
What do you actually want to achieve with your music? With the style of music I do, I see myself as one who showcases African culture. There are a lot of traditional African folk tunes that I will like to export to the world.
Do you think there is a place for Afro music on the global stage? Yes, there is. A lot of Nigerian artistes are already getting international attention. Besides, there are elements of Afro in the music of many international artistes such as Jay Z and Drake.
There’s a belief that a lot of Nigerian songs don’t carry messages, what do you think about that notion? Well, I think whoever writes a song has a reason for doing so, and they have a target audience in mind. I can tell you categorically that some people don’t like to listen to songs with messages; all they want is to dance to the beat. These are the hard truths we now face. However, I don’t do music without messages.
How do you derive inspiration for your music? Life situations, basically. When I was at LASU, there were a lot of chaotic situations, and things like that propel me to write songs. Some of my songs like ‘Aluta’ and ‘Testimony’ were actually inspired by real-life situations. Nature also affects my writing process.
If you were in a position to change one thing in the Nigerian music industry, what would it be? No artiste should perform with CD at concerts. Everybody should play with live band. That way, we would improve and promote our brand.
Which artistes do you admire? In Nigeria, I admire people like King Sunny Ade (KSA) and Ebenezer Obey. And on the international scene, I admire the likes of George Benson, Chuck Lowes, among others. How do you unwind? I watch movies, and I hang out with positive-minded friends. By the nature of what we do, depression sets in some times, so having positive-minded people around you helps a lot.
How would you describe your fashion sense and style? Just one word: Afro. You can’t detach that from everything about me. I like to appear African, and portray Africa in a good light.

ENT: Between Aliko Dangote and Governor Ajimobi

                   ALIKO DANGOTE                                       GOVERNOR AJIMOBI

By Tofarati Ige and Juliet Ebirim

As the richest black man in Africa, who sits atop Africa’s most diversified manufacturing conglomerate, no lofty accolades are out of order for Aliko Dangote. His path has been serrated with honours upon honours, so, it is no big surprise that University of Ibadan should find him worthy of the honour of the degree of Doctor of Science, which they conferred on him couple of days ago.

As expected, encomiums poured in from different angles. This is no surprise too, because when you live in the upper crust of the reef only gold fishes come visiting and they turned up for Dangote. But one person stood out among many that greeted the billionaire on his yet another honour and it is Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State.
In his message to the Dangote Group Chairman, the governor highlighted how close he is to the businessman, eulogising his personal attributes, perhaps, louder than any well wishers. “It gives me great personal pleasure to celebrate a friend and a brother whose towering accomplishments continue to exalt the names of Nigeria and Africa.
Yours is the inspiring story of a gallant fighter who snatched victory from the jaws of grim adversity not that of a prince unto whose laps greatness was thrown…” and on and on the poetic message went. Recall Governor Ajimobi was not always a politician, he was in fact a corporate titan prior to his foray into politics. When he was the Chief Executive Office of National Oil, now Conoil, their paths must have crossed on several occasions.

ENT: Okija set to crown Queen and King in grand style

 MS. CHIOMA UZOH

All is set for the 3rd ‘Face of Okija’ beauty pageant which is billed to hold amid fun fare on the 29th of December, at Okija, Anambra State. The beauty pageant, according to the organizers, is designed to promote humanitarian service and the cultural heritage of the Igbo nation.

Speaking on the contest, Ms.Chioma Uzoh who was crowned in 2014, said, what she learnt while working with the various divisions of the foundation in the past two years was how “to be more tolerant, patient, humble, as well as extremely passionate about charity work. “One can attest to the fact that with all these attributes improves one’s life,”she said. Described as “a beauty pageant with a difference”, Face of Okjia is a rich cultural event aimed at rejuvenating Igbo culture which has been badly eroded by all manner of external influences.
The Face of Okija supports and promotes Igbo language and culture in addition to laying great emphasis on the qualities of the archetypal African woman which includes honesty and decency. This year, the contest introduces a long-awaited twist with the introduction of a male category. There will be the Queen and the King who will become ambassadors of the Obi Jackson foundation for the duration of their reign. On the reason for these two big decisions, the founder of the Foundation Dr.
Ernest Azudialu Obiejesi said, “In all things, males and females represented including creation and especially in service to humanity, so the Face of Okija must reflect this duality.” The competition is open to Igbo and Okija indigenes below the age of 30 who are fluent in Igbo and hold at least a polytechnic or university degree.
This year, the King and Queen will be hired by the foundation and will earn a fixed salary of 1.4million for one year, an official vehicle for the duration of reign, a scholarship grant of one million naira (N1,000,000 ) and a chance to impact the lives of the indigenes of Okija, Igboland and Nigeria positively through a mix of social welfare programs that they will be required to champion.

ENT:Toke Makinwa in ‘On becoming’- I broke a bottle once on someone’s head

Posted By: KIZZYERISKY - 10:58:00 PM
By Omobolanle Jonah

Toke Makinwa popular Media personality in her just released book titled ‘On becoming’ talked about so many things that happen in life which we may not be able to comprehend, so many ups and downs, heartbreaks, pains and many more negatives, but in the end, the ability to overcome these things is what makes one a winner. The winner of a battle is that warrior that never gave up despite the injuries, pains and bullet holes. Toke Makinwa could be said to be one of the warriors who has not given up and definitely kept on fighting the life battles that we all face in different ways ‘on becoming’ This book ‘On becoming’ looks like a journey to self discovery or self actualization, finding out who she is, who she was and how she struggled to find healing to the pain and hurt she had felt in the past. Excerpts ‘To everyone who is as lost and in pain as I was, choose to believe that the sun will rise again’ The beginning of fulfillment in man starts from the self actualization; this is when he discovers who he really is and what he really wants in life. Many people have dreams and visions but seem not to get anywhere close to them because they have not had time to discover who they really are. Toke lost her parents at a very young age of eight to a house fire that was caused by their house aides and just then was the beginning of pain and sorrows in her life.

“From being a friendly bubbly child, I became withdrawn and taciturn, from being the child who always came first in class; I went to the bottom of the class”. Growing up without parents Growing up without parents at some point took a toll on Toke despite the fact that her Aunty who was referred to as ‘Big mummy’ took her and her siblings and raised them as hers; she still became notorious and rebellious. She could not focus on her studies and had no friends but her elder sister Opeyemi even in secondary school. ‘I broke a bottle once on someone’s head because I was angry’.

She continued to live a nonchalant lifestyle and now she was already in the university (UNILAG). She still did not take her academics seriously, mingled with different people and engaged in different activities which weren’t healthy for her studies. “I found a group of girls like me to ‘enjoy’ life with. We were members of a party club called ENVEE. It was like a rave club, we threw and attended parties everyday of the week, we were found at some party or club. My studies suffered but I didn’t care”. Despite all of these, Toke was a ‘soft lover’ she referred to herself as a helpless romantic who wanted a perfect and flawless prince charming as she had read in novels.

Meeting Maje Ayida Then in the university, she met her boyfriend who she dated for close to a decade before they got married; Maje Ayida. Her relationship with Maje was almost as perfect as she had always imagined in the beginning until things got sour, then she realised he was a liar and a cheat then the relationship was full of pain, hurt, heartbreak, tears and disappointments and all from the part of Maje. After doing all these hurtful things, he comes back to beg and she takes him back with open arms. It got so bad she discovered that he had a child and had even gotten another woman pregnant.

She got STDs from Maje which she treated severally, still she didn’t leave; she loved him with all her heart with the positive mind and hope that things were going to get better and she’d see the good in him. Amidst all these issues Toke still kept up well at work, she didn’t allow the issues in her home to affect her job which she had so much passion for. She’d cry all through the night but still leave for work at 5:00am . Marriage might be a lasting solution Years continued to go by and these things kept happening. Suddenly, she felt marriage might be a lasting solution to all these happening.

“But wait, maybe marriage would fix us. Yes, we had to get married and it is the only way we would have peace”. The good thing was that there was a spiritual side to Toke which had been instilled in her by her parents at a very young age, she always had that time to talk to her creator, fasted and prayed fervently. Alas! Toke and Maje got married. Maje had called off their wedding thrice and after all the disappointments, thus made the duo have a private wedding which they managed to keep secret for only two days after their wedding before the press blew it up. It all seemed rosy after the wedding and she felt it was all coming back to normal until a friend called out of the blue that a journalist called her to ask if it was true that Anita Solomon (Maje’s mistress) was pregnant and the press as well as bloggers want to carry out the story of her failing marriage and her husband impregnating someone else.

The news had broken to the entire public, she was ashamed, everywhere she turned to there was news about her marriage and even at her place of work when she walked pass, there will be silence in the room. She got several phone calls from people and she could hardly bear it anymore. After thinking marriage was the solution and it didn’t work, she felt having a baby will.
Maje wasn’t ready to have a baby with Toke but could get someone else pregnant? What a shame! She was ashamed, she lost a lot of things because of this scandal, she lost an endorsement deal, she lost her pride and self confidence. She started to look for ways to meet up Maje’s standard for women as he won’t leave Anita alone then there was something about her. She looked down on herself and always asked herself if she’d ever be good enough for him even up to the extent of her asking her husband to teach her Anita’s sex moves so she’d learn them.

There were other girls involved with Maje all through their relationship but Anita’s name was more pronounced as she already had a child for her Husband. Anita became her look up to as she went to bleach up her skin to look like Anita since she was light skinned and maybe Maje had a preference for light skinned women. “Shame is like having your most dismal test results read out in front of a huge assembly that doesn’t hold back on their judgement.
Nobody knows how much you studied and how many nights you spent struggling to keep up, none of those mattered as long as YOU FAILED, YOU FAILED”. At the end of the day, Toke was fed up, she wanted to leave but people kept talking about the African tradition and a woman leaving her husband. “… then there was family, some of my closest people, insisting that there were worse things than a pregnant mistress and that I needed to stay in my home. And who can blame them when our culture preaches that a woman must endure anything just to keep her marriage and her home”.

Finally she moved out of her home, got a smaller apartment and stayed there alone. After much counselling she got talking back with Maje and ended it all after she saw series of mails from Anita and confronted Maje and he didn’t deny. He admitted he preferred Anita and was going to be with her instead and that was it, she realized what she truly wanted and who she truly was, she didn’t listen to no one this time, she wanted it all over, she filed for a DIVORCE and let Maje go. Just then she repaired her relationship with God and felt it was the right time to listen and learn to wait for God’s guidance instead of rushing off to make moves based on her own understanding. She began to comfort herself with books, sermons and readings from the bible and chose to believe that God still loved and cared for her.

“I started aiming for clarity over emotions, it wasn’t easy but I pushed myself until i couldn’t push anymore…” As time went past, Toke had faith and hope that all will be well, she put all her trust in God and slowly came her journey to healing. “But the lessons I have learnt are sure to make my life easier going forward: What doesn’t kill you make you stronger. Forgiveness is hard. Saying it is easy but doing it is real work. Self-love is important.
Love yourself enough to put you first. You must accept the reality instead of wishing that your past were any different. God’s plan is bigger than you. The greater the plan, the bigger the purpose. Obviously, Toke’s ability to finally distinguish what she needed from what she thought she wanted helped her realise what she’s been missing and how she’s been paying less attention to loving herself. “…Now I have found a new freedom. I can be, I will be and I will continue to BE.
My past led me here, and my present gives me hope for a tomorrow where I become all God wants me to be. I take each day as it comes. I have good days and bad days and those in-between. I keep learning forgiveness. I keep growing in faith and i will continue to follow the light”. The book is an expression of heartache and heartbreak which she described as not a ‘’tell all’’ but a ‘’must tell’’ to inspire many young ladies out there. No wonder she didn’t grant any interviews about her failed marriage and kept it all bottled up, now she feels is the right time to let it all out.

Fans blast Ini Edo's Outfit to the AMVCA (Photo)

Posted By: KIZZYERISKY - 1:00:00 AM
This probably may not be a good time for Ini Edo as most of her fans are not happy with the outfit she wore to the African Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA).

She was criticized by most of her fans who made negative remarks about the stunning gown she wore to the event. Some said it was like a wedding gown, while others said its wasn't looking good for the event.

Ini who wasn't happy with their comments responded by saying:

'Now, this beautiful work of art has been designed by one man i call excellence on Craftsmanship that lots of people cannot beat of being successful at any form of craftsmanship or talent, yet they are quick to judge and insult people who invest their time into productive creativity.
Keep you senseless opinions to yourselves, comment on your pages and stay clear off my page if you have to say is discredit other people's hand work. Its only an ugly mind that would call this ugly. Enough said.'

Don Jazzy And Mavins Set To Port To GLO In Multi-Million Naira Deal

Posted By: KIZZYERISKY - 4:33:00 AM

In a move set to rock the corporate and entertainment world, Don Jazzy and the Mavins look set to ‘port’ from MTN to Nigerian-owned telecommunications giant, Globacom.

The audacious move comes just months before the contract of Nigeria’s foremost producer is due for renewal with MTN.

According to a source close to the negotiations, news of Don Jazzy’s availability came up just as Globacom was preparing offers to add Mavin’s rising musicians Di’Ja, Reekado Banks and Korede Bello to their fold of brand ambassadors.

The source added that not only is Glo eager to sign the young ones all at once, they are determined to break the bank by also offering a record-breaking deal to Don Jazzy.

The Mavin Records CEO, who currently has just two months to run on his MTN deal, recently broke the internet with news of his signing with online retail giant, Konga. He is considered an overlord of social media influencers and played an active role in creating awareness for the APC in the just concluded elections.
Although the other Mavin acts – Tiwa Savage, Dr. Sid, D’Prince – all have individual deals with MTN, any move to GLO by the head honcho would most likely result in a mass exodus which would hit the South African Telco hard.
The younger younger trio were signed to Mavin Records a year ago and have already planted their feet firmly in the Nigerian music industry, with hit solo songs and hit collaborations.
Sierra-Leonean-Nigerian Hadiza Blell (Di’Ja) is the sonorous voice behind the love song, Awww. Her music career started off with relative acclaim in Canada before she moved back to Nigeria in what has turned out to be a most lucrative decision: joining Mavin Records.
Korede Bello, consistently sets the hearts of his female fans racing with songs like African Prince and Cold Outside. He also has an endorsement deal with Woodin under his belt.
Reekado Banks, hailed by many for not just his good voice but his street cred, is best known for his song, Chop Am. The recent graduate of the University of Lagos is a favourite amongst young Nigerians.
All efforts to get a statement from Mavin Records PR proved abortive as they declined to comment.
